The Faroe Islands (or the Faeroe Islands) are an archipelago of 18 mountainous islands, with a total land area of 1,399 square kilometres and a population of 50,000. The main islands are Streymoy (Streym), Eysturoy (Eystur), Vágar, Suduroy (Sudur), Sandoy (Sand), Bordoy (Bord), and Svínoy (Svín). The capital is Tórshavn (Thorshavn) on Streymoy. The terrain is rugged; the climate is subpolar oceanic climate —windy, wet, cloudy, and cool.
